Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans
Week 6 — Sunday, October 12th, will have the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-5) against the Tennessee Titans (1-4). The game is being played at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee and will be televised on CBS at 1:00 PM EST
Setting the Stage (old school)
1999 was the best year in Jaguars franchise history finishing with a record of 14-2.
In 1999, I was up in Newport, Rhode Island taking classes at NAPS. I was introduced to rugby and actually went over to my coach’s house for a watch party for the Bills vs. Titans on Saturday, January 8th.
As a Jaguars fan, I was excited to see the Titans lose at any time and especially if it could be in the first round of the playoffs. The only team to beat the Jaguars the whole year may not going to be in the playoffs anymore and the Jags were beating the hell out of everyone else. Hell yeah, I want to watch this game. Fast Forward to the end of the 4th quarter. QB Rob Johnson and the bills take over the ball with 1:41 left on the clock down 15-13. Rob Johnson, a former Jaguar quarterback, leads the Bills down the field and Steve Christie comes in and kicks a 41 yard field goal to take the lead with 16 seconds left.
I am so excited. I have the biggest smile on my face. The only thing that would have been better was to have a Titan’s fan in the room with me so that I can talk smack. What a feeling. The Titans are going down and to a former Jaguar quarterback….like a little karma coming back to them.
Then it happened.
I will never forget the play as long as I live. Buffalo kicks the ball off to the Tennessee. The kick was received by the Titans and was handed off to TE Frank Wycheck by Lorenzo Neal. Wycheck runs a couple yards and throws a lateral across the field to WR Kevin Dyson. They dub it the “Music City Miracle”.
The rest, as they say, is history. Titans make it to the AFC Championship game and play the Jaguars. The Titans beat them for the third time that season. Jacksonville becomes the first team in NFL history to lose to one team three times in one season.
“Say it in English, man!”
I hate the Titans.
I hate them and consider them the biggest rival to Jacksonville based solely on the fact that I hate them so much…..and 1999.
I also am not a fan of Jeff Fisher. I know he is not the coach of Tennessee, I am not that far gone. He WAS the coach during the time when Jacksonville was doing well. He WAS the coach during 1999. He WAS the coach that came out and said he considered Jacksonville to be a “home away from home.”
I would like to see Jeff Fisher walking down the sidewalk one day. I really would.
What to Expect
A Jaguars win, plain and simple. No sugar coating it. The Jacksonville Jaguars will go to Tennessee this weekend and win. Here are some of the reasons why:
- Defense — The Jags defense looked really good against the Steelers last week giving up 10 points and keeping the big plays to a minimum. They got their customary 4 sacks and I expect them to get the same, if not more, this weekend against backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst who is expected to start.
- Running game — This has been a point of emphasis over the last couple of weeks for the Jaguars. Gerhart is listed as out and it will be the Robinson & Storm show (with a little Todman). Tennessee allows just over 136 yards per game rushing on defense. Control the game.
- Need that first win — Last year Jacksonville got their first win in Tennessee. I would love to see it again because….well, you know why. Backup quarterback and a team that has lost 4 in a row is a perfect time to get in the win column and get some momentum going.
- I said so — I know I predicted last week that the Jaguars would beat the Steelers. I missed. This week, no way. It is the Titans and anyone that plays for or works for that organization should understand our feelings about this team. My family that lives up there…I still love you. Just do NOT become Titans fans…just saying!
Blake Bortles throws for 250 yards and two touchdowns and an interception.
The ground game will show up and put up 125 yards rushing and add another score.
Josh Scobee will add 6 points because he needs to practice some kicking.
Titans will score…but not a lot.
Jaguars 27, Titans 13
